Catalano's Cafe, 3.0 stars

Catalano's Cafe 08 9362 1121 266 Albany Hwy, Victoria Park

Huge serves, fast service make this place a winner.  Fancy it is not.  My 75 year old mother, loved this place - enough said?

Next time we want lots of basic, wholesome we will think of this place.

Jac's Cafe, 3.5 Stars, $100 Dinner for 2 (inc Wine)

Jac's Cafe and Pizzeria, 1/45 Ardross Street, Applecross

Really nice, small, neighbourhood restaurant.

We have been here probably 10 times, for a quick weekend lunch or a mid week, lets not cook tonight dinner. The service is always prompt and attentive, the food is consistently good. We have probably had most of the mains during our visits and they are always good.

It can be hot inside with the Pizza oven.

The only ordinary meal we had was a special set dinner, which we thought lacked a little imagination in the choice of menu and presentation, although it was great food.

Previous meals:
  • Caesar salad, stake sandwich, grilled Salmon
  • Pasta with Meat balls
All good, with great wines and efficient and friendly enough service.

Millioncino, Perth CBD, 2.5 Stars

OK.

The waiter was just to eager for a tip.  Something that just not common in Perth and the service was ordinary.

Osteria Dei Sapori (3 stars)

Osteria Dei Sapori, 151 Broadway Road, Nedlands 6009, (08) 9386 4243

Overall an excellent experience, Good food, great service.

Well prepared and cooked tasty food. The service is almost to attentive at times, but that is nothing to complain about in Perth.

The decor is traditional and perhaps needs a bit of an update, although it is comfortable and nice to come accross such a great little place in the neighborhood.

Viva Restaurant 3 Stars - (08) 9364 8688

Food
  • Excellent. We had 1 starter and 2 pasta's and should only of have 1 pasta between 2. Fresh and tasty. Perhaps a little heavy. $60 all up including the $5 corkage

Feeling
  • They where not busy, but somehow took for ever to get menus (8 minutes - we leave at 10 if we get no attention)
  • They apologized and recovered well but still not great
  • The room is very traditional looking, perhaps a little tired
  • Generally quiet not il Ciao, I like il Ciao

We'll be back -
Update - ok went back and it was not that great - Service was good, but food was very average - the olive oil with the bread is tastless, the risotto is overcooked and the Gnocci most like mashed potato.

Zafferano - at the old swan - 1 star

Having read reports of the excellent food and the slow service I thought I know what to expect.

It started with poor service, as expected. We arrived a little earlier than our other dinner guests and so they decided the way to treat us was to ignore us for 10 minutes.

The location is great, down by the water, with the cool breeze and city lights.

The starter duck salad and oysters are excellent. The Mains alas, old fashioned and stoggy and, in my case, very very very garlicly - raw garlic is never good, what are they thinking. The pasta was not linguine as advertised, but spaghetti and overwhelmingly garlicy. Totally bad.

For $120 each all up is was very poor value - the Red Cabbage for 2 weeks ago is way better (except for the view)

The wines we had are excellent, if expensive - Smith and Shaw M3 Chardonnay and Green point SB. Both really yummy.

We won't go back for a while (ever).

Terrazza Cafe Applecross 2.5 stars out of 5

Summary

I think perhaps I was just not in a great mood and so perhaps I picked holes in what is overall a reasonable if not special place. I just don't like it when the greeter person makes a thing of finding a table for you in basically an empty restaurant. The place better be packed as some point to give meaning to the actions.

Positives
  • I steak was very nicely cooked (raw as ordered and tasty)
  • my other dinner guests appeared to enjoy there meal
Negatives
  • I picked steak because I could not see anything else I really wanted. The pepper sauce was out of the can and kind of gluppy, really not good.
  • Spider webs on the ceiling and all around the light. Look up boys and do some cleaning.
  • The menu is just a little odd.
  • Service was average, due to the shape of the restaurant the area we where seated does tend to get ignored and this was not made up for by the staff. Overall service was reasonable
Overall

I don't think I will be back for a while.

Lido Restaurant, northbride, 3.5 stars

Lido Restaurant Northbridge
15-06-2007
Overall good food in a lively (a little noisy) place. Will definitely go back.

We over ordered and took food home for tomorrow, we are not big eaters but 2 starter and 4 mains between 3 was completely over doing it we have enough food for 5 people.

The scallop and the duck/tofu dishes where excellent, as where the vegs in coconut cream curry and the steamed kai-lan. I would not recommend the pork rice paper rolls, they where unusually chewy and not that tasty.

The service was great to start with, but as they got busy it noticeably dropped off. Although they were very friendly.

Gucce, Applecross, 4 stars

Gucce Applecross

Pizza was really tasty; the tomato sauce is particularly good. The Caesar salad is also really excellent and fresh.

Minor negative comments:
1 - the olives on the pizza are very poor, old and low quality. There are some really amazing olives around WA, they really need to improve these, it’s a below average ingredient on a great pizza.
2 - the service is all very ok. But you do need to work at it a little to get what you want. They are busy, this is great, but the service should not suffer.

Summary: Book a table later in the week as it is busy and reasonably so.

Il Ciao, Applecross 4 stars, 9364 9966

Feeling

Noisy and busy with people laughing and smiling. Some big groups and small groups. Lots of people that look like they are regulars. A great relaxing and warm family place. Efficient no frills service from friendly servers. The decor is basic, the people make this place what it is.

Don't forget to take your own alcohol and expect to have a bit of a wait if you are going at a popular time. The place starts to empty at about 8.

No booking unless there is more than 8 of you
Food

Basic really tasty good value food. The Gnocchi in tomato basil sauce is only average so dont pick this, the other pasta and the mains have all been good. I tend to judge an italian restaurant on its Gnocchi so it is a bit disappointing.

Full Finish

This is a great place. I need to come here more often.
