The Bonsai, Northbridge

Modern Japanese.

We had the seaweed salad, duck, prawn and tuna, total $75 inc 2 beers.  Not a huge amount of food, but certainty enough.

The room is large and a little sterile, the main dinning room looks better.

PhuPho, Vic Park

Cheap and tasty basic Tai food from a busy little place.

The number of items on the menu that are not available is a little disconcerting.

Hinz Chinese Restaurant, (08) 9228 8399 Northbridge 10 Lake Street,

We where surprised, mostly because we thought it was a Japanese restaurant.  This room is bright.  No hiding in the corner for a quiet dinner here.  Its also mostly empty compared to many of the other places in the area when we eat.

Great service and big portions.  Prompt and attentive and the overall price reasonable given the size of the portions.  We had the mushrooms and veggies, share ribs and sausage clay pot.  All where good.  The mushrooms and veggies the best, really tasty spinach.  This will be just as good tomorrow.

The Dim Sum as a starter was best of all.  Definitely would be back for the Dim Sum.

Amarin Thai, Subiaco, 3 stars

Decor - Looking a little tired from the outside and dated on the inside.  Menu also feels like it needs a bit of an update somehow.

Dinner - Nice food and service
Pork and beans, Shrimp and Duck in a sweet source

Grand Palace Chinese Restaurant, CBD, 3.5 stars

I am not sure about a Chinese restaurant without any Chinese customers.

Great service, perhaps a little to attentive, but that is nothing.

The food is delish, really tasty and really expensive.

Sparrow Indonesian Restaurant, Northbridge, 3 stars

Cheap, great value, ordinary food.

For $30 we have enough for 2 and enough to take home for dinner the next night, that possibly makes it cheaper than Macdonalds.

decor can only be described as plain. Was this a Greek restaurant once a upon a time? The fake grape vine is oddly out of place.

Although it is cheap i don't think I will look forward to coming back so probably will not.

Good Fortune Duck House, Northbridge, 3.5 Stars $30 for 2 (no wine)

Good Fortune Duck House, 344 William St Northbridge 6003

Great Value: Typical basic decor, but fast, basic and friendly service

$30ish for a duck dinner is tough to beat.

Taka Japanese Cuisine, CBD, 4 stars $23 for 2

Taka Japanese Cuisine, Shafto Lane 347-417 Murray St, Perth

Very basic, efficient, canteen food. Unpretentious and cheap (and free tea!), what more can you ask for. I really like this bright bustling place for a quick lunch or dinner.

Yu, Burswood

Fancy Chinese food and all you would expect.

We have the banquet for 13 which was surprisingly not overwhelming amounts of food.  Kind of felt like we had the Banquet for 10 and paid for 13.

Overall, a great meal.  Need to go back and have the a la carte.

Silk Road Restaurant, 18 Riseley St Ardross, 2 Stars

Very Ordinary overall.

Service was poor on a slow night. The food seems expensive for what it was and the corkage charge was reminds me of a more sophisticated establishment.

Bliss Noodle bar, 683 Beaufort St, Mt Lawley - 2 stars

In summary - ordinary food. Perhaps it was the cold weather or my general disposition, but I did not take to this place or the the food.

The feeling:

A cold winter night, cold inside as well as outside. The place was close to empty, the staff outnumbering the eaters. This appeared to puzzle the staff so perhaps it is unusual.

The food:

The red curry noodles are very ordinary. The chicken has a microwaved look feeling to it and very little taste also.

Wagamama, Subi, 1.5 stars

It has been a while since I went to a Wagamama's.

Issues
  • Menu needs updating, freshening up
  • They arrived with chopsticks that they handed me with a firm grip on the eating end
  • The service was nervous generally and not at all thoughtful
Setting
  • Nice enough, relax on the chairs have and a beer.
Summary
  • There has to be better places than this today. Hope the London places are better than this.

Jade Dydnasty Seafood Restaurant, Northbridge, 3.5 stars

News Years feast.

The food was totally tasty and excellent.

The service completely absent.

We will go back for a regular meal to see what it is like. Hopefully the service is ok on a regular night.

Veit Hoa Vietnamese Rest, 349 William St, Northbridge, 3.5 stars out of 5

The typical tackie decor and service that is not super attentive. My favour decorating choices are the plastic plants hanging from the ceiling and the speaker support treatment (duct tape).

The food is tasty and still great value. BBQ pork and wonton soup and hot and spicy pork and beef are both great and a good meal for two for $18 (inc free tea) is rare these days. The prices have recently increased and apparently the portions are a little less genorous which is a little disappointing, but still this place is great food and a good price.

All in all it is great busy, good value place.

The Silk Road, Applecross 2 stars out of 5

Summary - OK, not great

Wednesday night at 8pm, not busy a little over half full and got seated next to the toilet on one of the few tables for 2 left. Why can they not see beyond the basics. I assume that if I return on a empty Monday I will again get to sit by the toilet. Although this is unlikely as I probably will not be back for awhile.

Negatives:
  • $8 corkage on the wine we had is way to much for such a little, basic place.
  • Overall the mains did not really taste of much.
  • The water glass was really small so they have to come to the table a lot to refill it (I like to drink water with my food and freely available tap water is part of the service in my opinion)
Positives:
  • service was comfortable and efficient, the waiter had a nice sense of humor
  • The food arrived promptly
  • the curry starter was excellent
  • the decour is nice enough
Overall:

At The Bridge restaurant down the road the food is better if you want Thai like food although the service can be slow. il Ciao is still the best Applecross restaurant for a quick and tasty and fun mid week meal.

Koinonia, Mt Lawley 3.5 stars (08) 9328 3611

The feel
basic, but busy on a Friday night a least.

The food
2 starters and 1 main between 2 is plenty for an after movie dinner, the duck is excellent, the lettuce things are ok, have had better.

The fulfillment
Super friendly Japanese waitress, nice to chat and talk about Japan

The final Work:
Basic, busy and good

Update: now closed

Ohnamiya Japanese Takeaway Food, Applecross 9364 3332

This basic cafe type of place is busy very night of the week with takeout and eat in, although you won't wait long for a table was to turnover is quiet quick.

The food is basic and fresh and the choice of dish types is interesting and easy to pick what you want. The tea is free, which is always nice.

The service polite and efficient.

A excellent mid week evening dinner when you just don't feel like cooking

Anna Vietnamese Restaurant, 2.5 stars - (08) 9444 3122

Fast Friendly service, tasty basic Vietnamese food in very ordinary, old surroundings, but its busy and humming and the food is even better the next day so order enough for the next day.

Bridge Cafe, Applecross 3.5 stars

Bridge Cafe (The) Applecross
01-08-2007
We had the Red Seafood Curry and the Squid. Both where very tasty, spicy and fresh, and overall excellent value for money, with dinner for 2, garlic bread, a beer and a glass of wine coming to $62. I would not have the garlic bread next time, because it was ordinary for $6 and we were totally full after our mains anyway.

When we arrived the place was empty (6:15) but by 7 it is really filling up on a Tuesday.

The host is chatty but overall the service was a little sparse, but overall reasonable and no worse that at some far more expensive places. Although we did wait 25 minutes for dinner when the place was empty. I could see this might be slow if busy.
